This Privacy Policy explains what data is processed, and how, when you use the "Retro Notebook - Diary, Notes" mobile app (package name: com.bluefish.notdefteri, Google Play). By using the app, you agree to the practices described in this policy.
Retro Notebook - Diary, Notes does not require an account. By default, all notes, titles, categories, tags, checklists, photos, voice recordings, and preferences you enter are stored only in your device's local database and are not sent to the developer's servers.
Version 4.3.0 adds journal mode: a page for each day, an optional mood marker, the activities you tag a day with, your writing streak, and which writing prompt started an entry. All of it is note content and follows exactly the same rule — it lives in the same local database, and it leaves your device only if you turn on cloud sync yourself.
Starting with version 4.0.0, the app offers two optional features that involve data leaving your device: signing in with Google and cloud sync (a Premium feature). Version 5.0.0 adds a third: the AI writing assistant (see Section 3). These only apply if you choose to use them.

You can use the entire core app without any account. If you choose to sign in with your Google account, Firebase Authentication (a Google service) handles the sign-in; the app receives your name, email address, profile picture, and a unique user ID, and uses them only to identify your account in the app.
If you are a Premium user and enable cloud sync, your notes and their attachments (photos, voice notes), together with your journal entries and the mood, activities and streak that go with them, are uploaded to the app's Firebase project on Google Cloud (Cloud Firestore and Cloud Storage) so they can be synchronized across your devices. Journal entries are stored under your own user document, separately from your notes. This data:

From version 5.0.0 the app includes an optional AI writing assistant (the ✨ button in the note editor): summarize, key points, bullet points, fix spelling, change tone, translate, continue writing, title and tag suggestions, and — with Premium AI — your own commands. Using it requires signing in, and before anything is sent for the first time the app shows a one-time explanation that you must accept. Journal entries are not sent to the AI assistant.
What is sent. Only when you tap an AI action: the text of the note you are working on — or only the part you selected, if you selected something — and, for your own AI commands, the instruction you typed. For title and tag suggestions, the note's text is sent. Nothing is sent in the background, and no other notes, attachments, photos or voice recordings are sent.
What is never sent. Locked notes are never sent under any circumstances. You can also exclude any individual note from AI in its menu ("Exclude this note from AI"); excluded notes are listed, and can be restored, in Settings → AI.
Where it goes. The text is sent over an encrypted connection (TLS) to Google's Gemini API through Firebase AI Logic (Google LLC). Google processes it as a service provider to generate the result, under the Gemini API Additional Terms of Service for paid services: Google does not use your prompts or the responses to train or improve its models, and logs them only for a limited period, solely to detect and prevent abuse. The developer never receives the text of your notes or the generated results on any server.
How long it is kept.
Transparency and feedback. Every AI result is marked as AI-generated, and the share of your allowance an action will use is shown before you run it. You can rate a result (👍/👎) and report an inappropriate result from the result screen; the rating and the report record only the type of AI action — never the text.
Analytics. For AI actions, Firebase Analytics receives only technical figures: the action type, the length of the input and output in characters, token counts, where it ran, and the reason for a failure. The content of your notes and of the results is never included.
Rewarded ads. In the free version you can optionally watch a short ad to summarize a note. This works like the other ads in Section 5; the ad network never receives your note.
The app offers optional Premium plans (Premium and Premium AI monthly and yearly subscriptions, and a one-time lifetime purchase). All payments are processed entirely by Google Play. The developer never receives your payment card details or billing address — only a confirmation of your entitlement (whether Premium is active). Subscriptions can be managed and cancelled anytime in Google Play. See Google's Privacy Policy for how Google processes payment data.
To support free use of the app, the free version displays ads served by Google AdMob (banner/native ads in the app's screens, plus occasional interstitial and app-open ads). AdMob may collect information such as your Advertising ID, device information, and usage data in order to serve and personalize ads. This data is processed directly by Google, under Google's own privacy policy — not by us:
You can limit or opt out of personalized ads from your device's ad settings at any time. Premium users see no ads, and the app makes no ad requests at all while Premium is active.
The app uses Google Firebase Analytics to collect anonymous, aggregated usage statistics (such as which screens are opened and which features are used). This helps the developer understand how the app is used and improve it. Analytics data does not include the content of your notes or of your journal — not the text, not your mood markers, not the activities you tag a day with, and not anything you send to or receive from the AI assistant. Photos are attached via Android's system photo picker, which does not require gallery-wide storage access — the app only receives the specific images you pick. The app does not request sensitive permissions such as location, contacts, or SMS. The note-sharing feature uses Android's built-in "share" menu; data is only sent to the app you choose (SMS, email, WhatsApp, etc.) with your explicit action.
Your app password and per-note lock passwords are stored encrypted on your device and are never shared with the developer or any third party. Notes that you do not sync never leave your device. Synced data is encrypted in transit (TLS) and protected by per-user security rules in Firebase. Uninstalling the app deletes all locally stored note data; cloud data (if any) remains until you delete your account.
You can delete your account and all cloud data at any time, directly in the app: Settings → Cloud Sync → Delete Account. This permanently removes:
Your AI usage record (Section 3) is deleted within 30 days of your account deletion. The AI history stored on your device is not affected by account deletion; you can clear it in Settings → AI → AI history.
Notes stored locally on your device are not touched by account deletion — you remain in control of them. If you cannot access the app, you can also request account deletion by emailing support@retronotebook.app from the Google account's email address; requests are honored within 30 days. You may also use our Account Deletion page to submit a deletion request. Retro Notebook - Diary, Notes does not knowingly collect personal data from children under the age of 13. The app is intended for a general audience.
This Privacy Policy may be updated from time to time. Material changes will be announced in the app's release notes or on its Google Play listing. The version shown here always reflects the current policy.
